Caring For Your Railway Models.
Every model train made by different manufacturers is a little different, therefore care must be taken when taking apart your locomotives, they come apart differently, they use different materials, and so forth.
The basic concept when it comes to cleaning your model railway engines is fairly simple. 1st you need to seperate the loco from the chasis to allow you to clean the moving parts inside.
Railway Models Cleaning
Once you have removed the locomotive shell you can begin cleaning out any hairs, dust or dirt found inside with a can of compressed air. It is often surprising how much dirt can accumalte inside your model railway locomotive.
Opting to use compressed air is often your best way of caring for your model railway locomotives. In some cases a solvent may be used. Remember you want to dissolve unwanted dirt or corrosion, not disolve any moving locomotive parts such as the gears.
Once the moving parts are cleaned, they should be lubricated. Light oil is usually used, but that can be bad for plastics. A 40-year-old locomotive is unlikely to have a lot of plastic parts in the running gear, but they may have some.
Worm gears were just beginning to be made out of plastic 40 years ago. There are some modern lubricants that are specifically made for use with plastic therefore it is best if you buy these lubricants which are the correct type for oiling your model railway loco.
